For a standard 1/8″ flood coat, plan on about 1 gallon of mixed epoxy per 12.8 sq ft, plus a seal coat and 10–20% extra for drips over the edges. A 6′ × 3′ dining table (18 sq ft) needs about 1.4 gallons for the flood coat alone and about 2.2–2.4 gallons with a seal coat and margin.

Below is the formula, a sizing table, and the product limits that decide how many coats you’ll pour.

The formula

Gallons = length (in) × width (in) × thickness (in) ÷ 231

231 cubic inches = 1 US gallon. For metric: liters = gallons × 3.785.

Coat thickness Coverage per gallon Gallons per sq ft
1/16″ ~25.6 sq ft 0.039
1/8″ ~12.8 sq ft 0.078
1/4″ ~6.4 sq ft 0.156

TotalBoat’s TableTop Epoxy TDS confirms the math: a 1-gallon kit covers 6.4 sq ft at 1/4″.

Common table sizes (1/8″ flood coat, no margin)

Table Top area Gallons Liters
24″ × 24″ end table 4 sq ft 0.31 1.2
48″ × 24″ desk 8 sq ft 0.62 2.4
60″ × 30″ desk/table 12.5 sq ft 0.97 3.7
72″ × 36″ dining 18 sq ft 1.40 5.3
84″ × 40″ dining 23.3 sq ft 1.82 6.9
96″ × 42″ conference 28 sq ft 2.18 8.3
48″ round 12.6 sq ft 0.98 3.7

For a round top: π × radius² × thickness ÷ 231. A 48″ round is 3.1416 × 24² × 0.125 ÷ 231 = 0.98 gal.

Don’t skip the seal coat

Wood releases air as epoxy soaks in, which shows up as bubbles in the flood coat. TotalBoat’s instructions call for a thin seal coat on wood first. They estimate about 24 sq ft per gallon kit for the seal coat (wood absorption varies a lot). For the 72″ × 36″ table, that’s roughly 0.75 gallon.

Add a margin for edges and waste

A flood coat runs off the edges. Most of what drips is lost unless you catch it. Also count:
– Edges: add the edge area (perimeter × edge thickness) if you’re coating the sides.
– Uneven or live-edge tops: low spots hold more resin.
– Mixing leftovers: residue in cups and on stir sticks.

A 10–20% margin is a common rule of thumb. Use the higher end for live edges and porous wood.

Worked example: 72″ × 36″ dining table

  1. Seal coat: 18 sq ft ÷ 24 sq ft/gal ≈ 0.75 gal
  2. Flood coat at 1/8″: 72 × 36 × 0.125 ÷ 231 = 1.40 gal
  3. Edges, 1.5″ thick: perimeter 216″ × 1.5″ × 0.125″ ÷ 231 = 0.18 gal
  4. Subtotal 2.33 gal; with a 10% margin, about 2.6 gal, i.e. three 1-gallon kits, mixed in separate batches

Product limits that change the plan

Product Max per coat Mix ratio Working time Recoat / cure Source
TotalBoat TableTop 1/4″ 1:1 by volume (1.2:1 by weight) ~40 min (pot life ~20 min) Next coat after ~3 h; light use 48 h; full cure 5–7 days TotalBoat TDS
Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy 1/8″ recommended per application; 0.25″ max casting 1:1 by volume 45–55 min Full cure 7 days (TDS) Stone Coat TDS

TotalBoat also says to mix no more than 1 gallon at a time and to apply at 65–80°F. Its heat resistance (HDT) is listed at 118°F, so use trivets under hot dishes.

For tops thicker than 1/4″, you need multiple coats, or a deep-pour resin for the fill (see best deep pour epoxy for river tables).

Use the calculator

Our epoxy calculator has a top-coat field: enter table length, width and coat thickness, and it adds the result to any river volume. Its river table tab handles the full project.

FAQ

How much epoxy for a 4′ × 8′ table top? 48 × 96 × 0.125 ÷ 231 = 2.49 gallons at 1/8″, before seal coat and margin.

How thick should a table top epoxy coat be? 1/8″ is the common flood coat. TotalBoat TableTop allows up to 1/4″ per coat; Stone Coat recommends 1/8″ per application.

How much does 1 gallon of epoxy cover? About 12.8 sq ft at 1/8″ or 6.4 sq ft at 1/4″.
