Walk down the garage-floor aisle and you’ll see kits labeled “1-car,” “2.5-car,” “epoxy,” “polycuramine” and “1-part epoxy.” The labels don’t tell you the important things: how much of your floor one box actually covers, what’s in the box versus what you still have to buy, and how long you’ll be parking in the driveway.

This guide is the shopping companion to our best epoxy for garage floor roundup. We focus on kit contents, kit sizing and the math for how many to buy, using the numbers the manufacturers publish. We haven’t tested these kits ourselves.

The short version

If you want… Look at Why (per manufacturer data)
The thickest single coat and the fastest return to parking Rust-Oleum RockSolid Polycuramine kit 96% solids; vehicle traffic in 24–36 hrs; 200–250 sq ft per pouch
The cheapest true two-part epoxy kit Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield water-based kit ~250 sq ft per 1-car kit on smooth concrete; vehicle traffic in 3 days
A two-part kit sold in cans instead of a pouch Seal-Krete Epoxy-Seal Pro Up to 250 sq ft smooth, 125–200 rough; vehicle traffic in 72 hrs
No mixing at all BEHR Premium 1-Part Epoxy (No. 900), sold by the gallon 300–500 sq ft/gal; 7 days before tires

What “1-car” and “2.5-car” actually mean

Kit names are marketing shorthand. What matters is the coverage line on the technical data sheet (TDS):

  • Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield (water-based) 1-car kit: about 250 sq ft of smooth, bare concrete. Rust-Oleum says to expect 125–200 sq ft on rough or porous concrete. The 2.5-car kit contains two burst pouches, two bags of etch and two bags of chips (EpoxyShield TDS ESH-39).
  • Rust-Oleum RockSolid Polycuramine: each pouch covers 200–250 sq ft, and the 2.5-car kit (two pouches) is rated up to 450–500 sq ft (RockSolid TDS RSD-10).
  • Seal-Krete Epoxy-Seal Pro: one kit covers up to 250 sq ft smooth, 125–200 sq ft broom-finished or rough (Seal-Krete TDS).

So a “2.5-car” kit is really a 2× kit. A typical two-car garage runs about 400–500 sq ft, and many are larger once you count the apron and the area under shelving. Measure your floor; don’t go by the label.

What’s in the box (and what isn’t)

Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield water-based pouch kit

Per the TDS, each 1-car kit includes:
– Two-part burst pouch: 92.5 fl oz Part B (base) + 27.5 fl oz Part A (activator)
– Decorative chips
– Concrete etch (a mild citric-acid etch, mixed one bag per two gallons of water)
– Instruction sheet

You’ll still need a roller frame, a stiff-bristle scrub brush, a watering can for the etch, a squeegee or wet/dry vac, a brush for cutting in, degreaser for oil spots and PPE.

Rust-Oleum RockSolid Polycuramine kit

The kit includes the burst pouch, a foam roller cover, decorative chips and concrete etch. The TDS lists items you buy separately, including a 9″ roller frame, and optional add-ons such as concrete patch and anti-skid additive.

Seal-Krete Epoxy-Seal Pro

A two-can kit (Part A and Part B) with concrete etch included. Seal-Krete says to mix Part A for 2 minutes, add all of Part B, and mix 2 more minutes.

One-part “epoxy” (BEHR No. 900, Seal-Krete Epoxy-Seal)

These are sold as single gallons, not kits. Nothing to mix, but you buy etch, rollers and any flakes separately.

How many kits do I need? The formula

Kits needed = (floor area × number of coats) ÷ coverage per kit on your surface, + 10% margin, rounded up

Use the rough-concrete coverage figure if your slab is broom-finished, pitted or very porous.

Worked examples (smooth concrete, one coat, 10% margin)

Garage Area EpoxyShield (250 sq ft/kit) RockSolid (250 sq ft/pouch)
1-car, 12′ × 22′ 264 sq ft 264 × 1.1 ÷ 250 = 1.16 → 2 kits 1.16 → 2 pouches (one 2.5-car kit)
2-car, 20′ × 20′ 400 sq ft 1.76 → 2 kits 1.76 → 2 pouches (one 2.5-car kit)
2-car, 22′ × 22′ 484 sq ft 2.13 → 3 kits 2.13 → 3 pouches
3-car, 32′ × 22′ 704 sq ft 3.1 → 4 kits 3.1 → 4 pouches

On rough concrete, rerun the math with EpoxyShield’s 125–200 sq ft range. A 400 sq ft floor at 150 sq ft per kit is 400 × 1.1 ÷ 150 = 2.93, so 3 kits.

Rather do it automatically? Our epoxy calculator has a floor-coating tab that applies the surface factor and margin for you.

Tip: RockSolid is mixed one pouch at a time (TDS), and EpoxyShield’s pot life is 1–2 hours depending on temperature. Buying one extra pouch rather than stretching the last one is cheaper than a thin, patchy section.

Cure time: how long you’ll be parking outside

Kit Foot traffic Vehicle traffic Source
RockSolid Polycuramine 8–10 hrs 24–36 hrs RockSolid TDS
EpoxyShield water-based 12–16 hrs light, 24–48 hrs normal 3 days EpoxyShield TDS
Epoxy-Seal Pro 24 hrs 72 hrs Seal-Krete TDS
BEHR 1-Part Epoxy No. 900 24 hrs light, 72 hrs heavy 7 days Behr product page

Temperature windows

Check the forecast before you buy, because a cold or humid weekend can wreck a kit:

  • EpoxyShield: air, material and surface at 60–85°F, surface at least 5°F above the dew point, RH no more than 85%.
  • RockSolid: apply at 40–90°F, with 55–90°F optimal; don’t apply in direct sunlight.
  • Epoxy-Seal Pro: 50–95°F, RH at or below 80%, and no drop below 50°F for 24–48 hours before or after.
  • BEHR No. 900: air and surface at 50–90°F.

Before you buy: three quick checks

  1. Moisture: tape a 2′ × 2′ plastic sheet to bare concrete for 24 hours (EpoxyShield TDS). Droplets or darkened concrete mean you have a moisture problem to fix first.
  2. Sealer: drip water on the floor. If it beads, a sealer is present and must come off.
  3. Old paint: do the X-cut tape test. Rust-Oleum says if more than 25% of the old paint lifts, remove it before coating.

Our step-by-step guide covers prep in detail.

FAQ

Is a 2.5-car kit enough for my 2-car garage? Often, if the slab is smooth and under about 450 sq ft. RockSolid’s 2.5-car kit is rated up to 450–500 sq ft. On rough concrete or larger floors, plan on an extra pouch.

Can I mix two kits together to save time? Follow the TDS. RockSolid specifically says to mix one pouch at a time. Mixing more than you can roll before the pot life ends wastes product.

Do I need the chips? No. They’re decorative and help hide imperfections. Leave them out if you prefer a solid color.

Do kits include a topcoat? Not the kits above. A clear topcoat is a separate purchase.
