“How much does an epoxy garage floor cost?” gets a frustrating answer: anywhere from about $150 to $6,000 for a two-car garage. The range is that wide because a DIY water-based kit and a professionally ground, multi-coat flake system are both called “epoxy floors.”

This guide breaks the cost into its parts (materials, prep and labor) so you can tell which end of the range you’re really shopping in. Figures are from published 2026 cost guides (Angi, The Garage Guide) and manufacturer and retailer data. We didn’t collect our own contractor quotes.

Quick numbers

DIY Professional
Typical cost per sq ft $2–$5 (Angi, materials and tools) $2–$12 installed (Angi); $3–$7 for epoxy specifically (The Garage Guide)
2-car garage ~$150–$650 in kits (The Garage Guide) ~$1,500–$6,000 (Angi, 500 sq ft)
National average — ~$2,526 per project (Angi)
Prep method Acid/citric etch, or rented grinder Diamond grinding is the standard
Realistic lifespan cited 2–5 years for water-based DIY kits (The Garage Guide) 10–20 years with professional install (The Garage Guide)

Lifespan figures are the cost guides’ estimates, not ours. Durability depends mostly on prep and film thickness.

Professional cost by garage size

Angi’s 2026 data (materials plus labor):

Garage Square feet Installed price range
One-car 250 $750–$3,000
Two-car 500 $1,500–$6,000
Three-car 750 $2,250–$9,000

Angi says labor makes up 33%–60% of the total, or roughly $1–$7 per sq ft ($50–$150 per hour), and most companies send a two-person crew.

What drives a pro quote up or down

1. Resin type. Angi lists material prices per gallon:

Epoxy resin type Cost per gallon (Angi)
Water-based $30–$50
Solvent-based $40–$55
100% solids $45–$150
Rock and pebble ~$100

The Garage Guide prices installed systems from $3–$5/sq ft for water-based epoxy up to $8–$12 for metallic epoxy, with flake/chip systems at $5–$8.

2. Surface prep. This is the biggest difference between a pro job and most DIY jobs. The Garage Guide lists diamond grinding at $1–$3/sq ft, crack repair at $0.50–$2, moisture mitigation at $2–$5, and old-coating removal at $1–$3.

3. Concrete repairs. Angi puts basic patching at $25–$250 and full concrete resurfacing at $1,000–$5,000.

4. Decorative options. Flakes, quartz and metallic finishes add cost. The Garage Guide says flake broadcasts add about $0.50–$2/sq ft.

5. Location and garage size. Small garages cost more per square foot because setup and prep costs are fixed. Urban areas with high labor rates run above average.

What DIY really costs

The kit is only part of the bill. For a typical 400–500 sq ft two-car garage:

Kits. Two to three water-based epoxy kits (about 250 sq ft each on smooth concrete), or one to two RockSolid 2.5-car kits. Home Depot listed the RockSolid 2.5-car kit at roughly $300–$330 when we checked in October 2026. See how many kits you need.

Prep supplies. Degreaser, a stiff-bristle brush, a watering can, a squeegee or wet/dry vac, and crack filler.

Application tools. A roller frame (RockSolid’s TDS says the 9″ frame is sold separately), extension pole, cut-in brush, spiked shoes if you’ll broadcast flakes, tape and PPE.

Optional upgrades. A grinder rental for better prep, extra flakes, a clear topcoat or an anti-skid additive.

Your time. Most DIY kits take a weekend for prep plus application, and then 3 days (EpoxyShield) to 24–36 hours (RockSolid) before you can park, per the manufacturers’ TDS.

DIY vs. pro: how to decide

DIY makes sense if:
– Your slab is in good shape, with no moisture problem and no failing old coating.
– You’re fine with a thinner water-based film or a single-coat hybrid.
– You can keep the car out for 1–3 days and work within the kit’s temperature window (EpoxyShield: 60–85°F).

Hire a pro if:
– You want a polyaspartic or polyurea topcoat. These are mostly professional products (see epoxy vs. polyaspartic vs. polyurea).
– The floor needs grinding, coating removal, crack repair or moisture mitigation.
– You want a labor warranty, or the garage back in about a day.

Cost per year: a fairer comparison

The Garage Guide frames it as total cost over 20 years, because cheaper coatings get redone more often. In its example for a 400 sq ft garage, a $250 water-based DIY epoxy redone every ~3 years totals about $1,500–$1,750, while a ~$3,500 professional polyaspartic floor lasting 20 years totals about $3,500. Those are the guide’s assumptions, not guarantees, but the takeaway holds: prep quality and redo frequency matter more than the sticker price.

Ways to save

  • Measure carefully and buy the right number of kits. Use our epoxy calculator.
  • Skip decorative extras if you just want a cleanable floor.
  • Do the prep yourself and get a quote for coating only. Some installers will price it that way, but most insist on their own grind.
  • Get three quotes that name the exact product, prep method, number of coats and warranty.

FAQ

How much does it cost to epoxy a 2-car garage? About $150–$650 in DIY kits for a two-car garage (The Garage Guide), or roughly $1,500–$6,000 installed for 500 sq ft (Angi).

Why are pro quotes so different? Prep method (grinding vs. etching), resin type, number of coats, flakes and topcoat, and local labor rates.

Is epoxy cheaper than polyaspartic? Usually. See our epoxy vs. polyaspartic cost breakdown.
