Short answer: for a typical two-car garage of about 400–500 sq ft, plan on two to three one-car water-based epoxy kits on smooth concrete, or one 2.5-car RockSolid kit plus a spare pouch for floors over about 450 sq ft. Rough or porous concrete can push that up by a full kit or more.

Here’s how to get your exact number.

Step 1: Measure your actual floor

“Two-car garage” covers a lot of sizes. Common footprints:

Garage size Area
18′ × 20′ 360 sq ft
20′ × 20′ 400 sq ft
22′ × 22′ 484 sq ft
24′ × 24′ 576 sq ft

Cost guides use similar figures. Angi uses 500 sq ft for a two-car garage and The Garage Guide uses 400 sq ft. Measure wall to wall, add any steps or the apron you plan to coat, and subtract built-in cabinets or slabs you’ll skip.

Step 2: Find your product’s coverage

Use the coverage on the technical data sheet (TDS), and use the rough-surface number if your slab is broom-finished or porous:

Product Smooth concrete Rough / porous Source
Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield (1-car kit) ~250 sq ft 125–200 sq ft EpoxyShield TDS & instructions
Rust-Oleum RockSolid (per pouch) 200–250 sq ft “may vary” RockSolid TDS
Seal-Krete Epoxy-Seal Pro (kit) up to 250 sq ft 125–200 sq ft Seal-Krete TDS
BEHR 1-Part Epoxy No. 900 (gallon) 400–500 sq ft 300–400 sq ft Behr product page
Seal-Krete Epoxy-Seal 1-part (gallon) up to 500 sq ft — Lowe’s listing

Step 3: Do the math

Units = area × coats ÷ coverage × 1.10 (10% margin), rounded up

Example A: 20′ × 20′ (400 sq ft), smooth, EpoxyShield, 1 coat

400 × 1 ÷ 250 × 1.10 = 1.76 → 2 kits

Example B: 22′ × 22′ (484 sq ft), smooth, EpoxyShield, 1 coat

484 ÷ 250 × 1.10 = 2.13 → 3 kits

Example C: 20′ × 20′, broom finish, EpoxyShield

Use 150 sq ft (middle of the 125–200 range): 400 ÷ 150 × 1.10 = 2.93 → 3 kits

Example D: 22′ × 22′, RockSolid, 1 coat

At the conservative 200 sq ft per pouch: 484 ÷ 200 × 1.10 = 2.66 → 3 pouches (one 2.5-car kit plus one 1-car kit). At 250 sq ft per pouch it’s 2.13, which still rounds up to 3.

Example E: 24′ × 24′ (576 sq ft), BEHR 1-Part Epoxy, 2 coats, smooth

Use 400 sq ft/gal (the low end of smooth): 576 × 2 ÷ 400 × 1.10 = 3.17 → 4 gallons

Our epoxy calculator does this for you. Pick the floor tab, enter length, width, coats and coverage, and choose your surface type.

In gallons

Some buyers want the answer in gallons. Based on the TDS kit contents, a Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield 1-car pouch holds 92.5 fl oz base + 27.5 fl oz activator = 120 fl oz, or about 0.94 gallon of mixed coating. So 2–3 kits for a two-car garage works out to roughly 1.9–2.8 gallons of mixed EpoxyShield.

For 100%-solids professional epoxies, coverage depends on the film thickness you choose. See how much epoxy per square foot for the mils math.

Don’t forget

  • Flakes: kits include a bag of decorative chips sized for light coverage. A full-broadcast flake look needs far more flake.
  • Second coat: if you plan two coats, double the material. Mind the recoat windows (RockSolid: 7 days without sanding; Epoxy-Seal Pro: within 24 hours).
  • Mixing limits: RockSolid says to mix one pouch at a time, so a 3-pouch job means three separate mix-and-roll sessions.
  • Temperature: EpoxyShield’s application window is 60–85°F; RockSolid’s is 40–90°F (55–90°F optimal).

FAQ

Is one 2.5-car kit enough for a 2-car garage? RockSolid’s 2.5-car kit is rated up to 450–500 sq ft, so it can cover a 20′ × 20′ floor. For 22′ × 22′ and up, or rough concrete, buy a spare pouch.

How much epoxy for a 2-car garage in gallons? About 2–3 gallons of mixed water-based kit coating for one coat on smooth concrete, more on rough slabs.

Should I buy extra? Yes. Running short mid-floor leaves a visible seam, and many retailers accept returns of unopened kits (check the store’s policy).
