Up front, epoxy is cheaper. The Garage Guide’s 2026 figures put installed epoxy at $3–$7/sq ft and polyaspartic at $5–$12/sq ft. Over 20 years, a pro polyaspartic floor can cost the same as or less than a pro epoxy floor, because the same guide estimates polyaspartic lasts 15–20 years while pro epoxy needs one or two reapplications.
For the chemistry and performance side, see epoxy vs. polyaspartic garage floor. This page is about the money.
Upfront cost
| Epoxy | Polyaspartic | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed, per sq ft | $3–$7 (water-based $3–$5; 100%-solids $4–$7) | $5–$12 |
| 2-car garage, installed | ~$1,200–$2,800 (400 sq ft at $3–$7) | ~$2,000–$4,800 |
| DIY kit, 2-car | ~$150–$650 | DIY polyaspartic kits exist but are less common; short pot life |
| Material, per gallon | Water-based $30–$50; 100% solids $45–$150 (Angi) | — (varies by brand) |

Cost over 20 years
The Garage Guide compares lifetime cost for a typical garage:
| Option (400 sq ft) | Upfront | Expected life | Reapplications in 20 yr | 20-year total | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Water-based epoxy (DIY) | $250 | 3 yr | 5–6 | $1,500–$1,750 | $75–$88 |
| Quality DIY epoxy kit | $400 | 5 yr | 3 | $1,600 | $80 |
| Professional epoxy | $2,200 | 7–10 yr | 1–2 | $3,300–$4,400 | $165–$220 |
| Professional polyurea | $3,000 | 15–20 yr | 0–1 | $3,000–$4,500 | $150–$225 |
| Professional polyaspartic | $3,500 | 20 yr | 0 | $3,500 | $175 |
Among professional installs, the guide’s math puts polyaspartic at or below pro epoxy over 20 years. DIY kits look cheapest on paper, but only if every redo goes well. The same publisher’s epoxy cost guide claims improper prep causes peeling in 30–50% of DIY jobs (their estimate, not ours), and stripping a failed coat adds cost.
What really drives the price difference
- Material cost. Polyaspartic resins cost more per gallon.
- Labor speed. Polyaspartic’s short pot life (ArmorGarage Poly 80: 30–35 min) needs an experienced crew. Its speed can also cut labor days: ArmorGarage lists vehicle traffic at 24 h.
- Prep is the same for both. Diamond grinding runs about $1–$3/sq ft (The Garage Guide). Skipping it doesn’t make either coating cheaper over the long run.
- Hybrid systems. Many pros put down an epoxy base with flakes and then a polyaspartic topcoat. That usually prices between the two.
Hidden costs to factor in
- Downtime: epoxy kits like EpoxyShield need 3 days before cars, while polyaspartic systems often return to service in about 24 hours. If you have nowhere else to park, that matters.
- UV exposure: epoxy can amber in sunlit garages. Polyaspartic’s aliphatic chemistry is marketed as UV-stable. Recoating yellowed epoxy is a real future cost.
- Repairs: concrete patching $25–$250; resurfacing $1,000–$5,000 (Angi). These are the same for both.
Bottom line
- Lowest cost now: DIY epoxy kit. Expect to redo it sooner.
- Middle ground: pro epoxy base plus polyaspartic topcoat.
- Lowest hassle per year: pro polyaspartic, if the installer grinds properly and offers a written warranty.

FAQ
Is polyaspartic worth the extra cost? It can be, if you want a one-day install, have a sunlit garage, or plan to stay in the home for many years.
Why is polyaspartic so expensive? Higher material costs and the skilled labor needed to work with its short pot life.
Can I DIY polyaspartic to save money? Some DIY kits exist, but working times are short. Read the TDS pot life and mix small batches.
